Tesla's Full Self-Driving timeline delayed again: Q2 2027 with limited zones
Tesla has postponed the arrival of unsupervised Full Self-Driving to Q2 2027, but only within Robotaxi zones.

Tesla has pushed the release of unsupervised Full Self-Driving to Q2 2027, the latest delay in a promise Elon Musk has made to FSD buyers since 2016. But there’s a catch: owners will only be able to use their cars unsupervised inside Tesla’s managed Robotaxi zones. This means the feature will not allow owners to drive themselves anywhere through a software update, as originally pitched.
The question shareholders asked was straightforward: “When can we anticipate FSD unsupervised in customer cars?” Elluswamy answered that it will be available in Q2 2027. However, the feature will not let owners use their cars unsupervised anywhere. Instead, it will allow them to put their cars into Tesla’s Robotaxi network, where Tesla runs the operation, and only inside those zones.
The zones are small: Tesla’s Robotaxi service runs in six US metros, but the service areas cover only small slices of those cities. Inside those zones, the service sticks to low-speed routes, largely stays off highways, and avoids the harder parts of town. In the Bay Area, it isn’t unsupervised at all, as California rules require a safety driver in every car because Tesla doesn’t want to release data to the California DMV, which it has to do beyond a level 2 autonomous system.
The fleet is also small: Tesla says Robotaxi reached nearly 2 million cumulative unsupervised miles by the end of Q3, a month after Cybercab joined the Austin fleet. Third-party tracking this spring showed the number of fully driverless Teslas on the road in the dozens, nowhere near the hundreds of thousands Musk had talked about. Waymo, meanwhile, was already in both Orlando and Tampa before Tesla showed up, and it has over 3 million miles.
The promise was not what Tesla sold: for years, the pitch to FSD buyers was a car that would eventually drive itself anywhere through a software update. Now the target is Q2 2027, and the product is narrower: your car joins Tesla’s fleet, in Tesla’s zones, on Tesla’s terms.
